Hi there, I'm reasonably new to Mexican food but I've made this so many times now I could do it in my sleep. Usually only to go in beef enchilada filling in place of canned refried beans as per the recipe I use. I usually eat most of it before it hits the filling though. I make it occasionally to be a side but again, I eat most of it before it hits the plate. I've nothing to compare it to as we've never had the canned stuff or felt the need to try another recipe. This one is just devine. Thankyou so much

Hi Scott, the recipe specifies either canned or cooked beans. If you're looking for a method for cooking beans from dried, I've shared that in this post.

Hello,

In your recipe you should add that, when using dried beans, you MUST fully soak and cook the beans, and give instructions on how to do that.
Toxins in the dried beans, if not cook throughly, can poison a person and cause food poisoning and that’s not pretty. Thank you

I made this today with the suggested bell pepper and jalapeño, subbed in a can of black beans for the second can of pinto beans (since I only had one can of each) and it was still excellent! My baby was a big fan of the refried beans, too!
